Writer's picture: Bruno ZARATEBruno ZARATE

The town of Châteaudun stands out for the beauty of its site, at the top of a rocky promontory overlooking the River Loir, and the majesty of its castle. Home to 58 listed or protected sites and monuments, the town can be explored on a pleasant tour of the historic quarter, or you can take one of the guided tours offered by the Tourist Office.

During the summer months, you can take a step back in time with our dramatised guided tours. The streets of the medieval town are brought to life by a host of costumed actors.

Visit one of the great princely châteaux with its remarkable architecture, that of Jehan de Dunois, Jeanne d'Arc comrade-in-arms.

Discover an unexpected subterranean world as you follow the guide through the great natural caverns carved out by the waters 65 million years ago. Plunge back in time to a period when the country was submerged under the sea and Man had not yet appeared. The underground route allows you to admire a remarkable concentration of quartz geodes and bluish chalcedony that line the limestone walls of these caves dating from the Upper Cretaceous period.

You can also enjoy the illumination of the site as you visit, and take your children on a treasure hunt to combine play and discovery.

Join the canoeing club on a tour of Chemars Island, located between two arms of the Loir at the foot of the upper town. This two-hour trip allows you to admire the castle from all angles from your boat, including the great buttresses of the Dunois wing anchored in the rocky escarpment, overlooking the sixty-metre-high Saint-Médard bridge.
