Trôo is one of the prettiest and most unusual villages in France, and was awarded the "Petites Cités de Caractère" label on 9 July 2021.
Today, Trôo is best known for its troglodyte dwellings, built on four main levels in former tufa quarries.
Its layout, made up of tiered terraces, caves, paths and stairways, is highly unusual. With no real streets or centre, it's curiosity that makes you want to explore it.
The most common interpretation of its name is "trou", an allusion to the caverns that hollow out the hillside. Trôo would be the old English or Angevin spelling. Its troglodyte dwellings give an idea of how people lived in the past, and the underground network of cellars and galleries is a reminder that turbulent periods in our history led people to take refuge here.
